Domestic Flights in Vietnam: Our Experience
Flying domestically in Vietnam is one of the easiest ways to travel between regions, especially if you’re visiting places like Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City in one trip. During our travels, we flew with VieTravel, VietJet, and Vietnam Airlines. Here’s what our experience was like with each airline.
Note: We weren’t asked to present our eVisas for domestic flights within Vietnam, although we still kept copies on hand just in case.
Ho Chi Minh City – Hanoi
Airline: VieTravel Airlines
Airport: Tan Son Nhat International Airport Terminal 3
Departure Time: 9:05pm (delayed until 9:30pm)
Our Experience:
- Once we dropped our luggage, we had to stand off to the side and see if our names appeared on a screen. After 10 minutes, if our names didn’t show up, we were free to move towards security check
- After arriving in Hanoi, we waited for buses to drive us to the airport since we landed further away
Hanoi – Danang
Airline: VietJet Airlines
Airport: Noi Bai International Airport Terminal 1
Departure Time: 8:40am (delayed until 9:00am)
Our Experience:
- We originally booked with VieTravel, but the flight was cancelled. We had travel insurance, but buying 5 last-minute tickets still wasn’t cheap.
- We booked VietJet Airlines the day of our flight
- I was worried because of all the negative reviews on the airline, but aside from a short delay, the overall experience was smooth – possibly because we caught one of the earlier flights of the day
Danang – Ho Chi Minh City
Airline: Vietnam Airlines
Airport: Da Nang International Airport Terminal 1
Departure Time: 5:20pm (delayed until 5:40pm)
Our Experience:
- The most expensive out of the 3 airlines we tried, but a reliable carrier
- Aside from a slight delay in departure, the overall experience was smooth
Overall, flying domestically in Vietnam was one of the easiest ways for us to travel between regions. While delays and cancellations can happen, especially with budget carriers, most of our flights were straightforward and relatively stress-free. If you’re planning to visit multiple cities in one trip, domestic flights can save a lot of travel time.
